An Italian carved wood statue of Madonna and Child

Adding to our collection of rare and unique decorative items is this wonderful 18th Century Madonna & Child carved wooden statue in fruitwood.

This depiction of Madonna & Child is a captivating rendition of the famous marble sculpture by Michelangelo of the Virgin and Child. Interestingly, Michelangelo’s interpretation differs significantly from the very first representations of the subject. Whilst the earlier versions featured a pious Virgin smiling down on an infant held in her arms, Michelangelo’s depiction shows a toddler perched in her lap.

The size of this beautiful, 18th century Italian carved wood statue, now part of the Brownrigg collection, really shows the piece off to great effect, showcasing a lovely patina and a rich shade of wood. Note how the faces are beautifully carved, enhancing the statue’s character and overall appearance.

This unique piece has certainly aged gracefully! Yes, there are a few visible signs of the passing years, but these really add to its charm. You can find this exceptional carving under our ‘Decorative Items’ category.
