PROVENANCE:-Burstow and Hewitt

Laura Knight (1877-1970),one of the leading women artist of the twentieth century, was a household nameduring her lifetime and the first woman artist to be made a Dame of the British Empire.
Her work is remarkable for its variety
and for its quality. From her early images of life in a Yorkshire fishing village to the brigthness and vigour of her paintings of women and children out of doors in Cornwall and her later paintings recording the starkness of the Nuremberg trials, her work is painted with a directness and flair for human experience.
She is perhaps most famous for her captivating portrayals of the world of London`s theatre and ballet, and of the circus.Fairs and performances engaged her interest in the exotica of costume and scenery, but she was also attracted to the quiet moments backstage, behind the clamour of public enjoyment.
