A Rare Carved Oak & Marble Console Table by Marc Du Plantier, 1930s

A rare and probably unique carved oak console table by Marc Du Plantier. The frieze and legs are each carved from a single piece of oak; as visible in the images the carving is in almost high-relief, evidently by an accomplished hand and unusually heightened in a pale green paint. The cabriole legs are delicately drawn, ending in hoof feet, and have patinated particularly well. The serpentine rouge royale marble top is original and has a great double-moulded edge. Entirely original and untouched condition throughout.

Stamped twice to the frame; M DU PLANTIER

French or Spanish, circa 1940, by Marc du Plantier (1901 – 1975).

du Plantier spent the war years in Spain providing interiors to the great and good there and this table is likely to have formed part of large commission in the rococo style for a private client. It offers an interesting perspective on the work he was creating at this time, and is in marked contrast to his Paris output of just a few years earlier.
