Late 17th Cent Felletin Manufacture Tapestry ‘King Louis XIV Forest Games as a Teenager’

Aubusson / Felletin tapestry panel from the end of the 17th century (circa 1680), belonging to a series of tapestry hangings with the subject of children’s games. Here we can see four young boys, dressed in the fashion of their time, the young Louis XIV still a child preparing to shoot a ring with a bow, the future “Monsieur” brother of Louis XIV waiting his turn and the third and fourth assist them in the exercise. For what the little King does is God’s will.

The panel presented here belongs to a series of tapestries executed after the cartoons of Florentin Damoiselet (1632-1702). This first series of thirteen-panel hangings, woven around 1670 or a little before in Beauvais, for the apartments of the Dauphin, future Louis XIV and his brother, then both children, was about children’s games. The panel that we present is to be put in equivalence with the panel preserved in the collections of the Louvre under the title : The Little Queen, where we can see a child playing the role of a Queen around whom other children hurry to serve her. The Manufactures Royales de Felletin et d’Aubusson would occasionally have a series of cardboards for a particular order lent to them by other manufacturers. Not to be confused with the series of hangings, child gardeners, according to the cartoons of Charles Lebrun (1619-1690), woven at Les Gobelins around 1720.
