18th Century Delft Blue and White Ribbed Plate, Circa 1770s

18th-Century Delft Blue & White Ware. A large Dutch Delft blue and white plate, circa 1770, distinguished by its moulded, ribbed border. The centre is charmingly hand-painted with a female figure surrounded by an exuberant arrangement of flowers and foliage, while the shaped border is decorated with repeating floral and foliate motifs in rich cobalt blue.

The combination of the moulded surface, flowing floral decoration and figurative centre gives this plate an especially lively and decorative presence.

Delft was one of Europe’s foremost centres for tin-glazed earthenware during the 18th century. Inspired by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Delft potters developed their own distinctive repertoire of hand-painted decoration, combining Oriental motifs with European flowers, landscapes, figures and ornamental designs. Painted in cobalt blue over an opaque white tin glaze, these plates and chargers were made both for use and decorative display.
