18th-Century Delft Blue & White Ware

Delft Blue and White Plate, circa 1700

A large Dutch Delft blue and white plate, circa 1700, boldly hand-painted with a chinoiserie figural scene. The central composition depicts two figures beneath an architectural canopy, framed by a scrolling border and a broad segmented rim decorated with alternating floral motifs and further figural vignettes.

The spontaneous brushwork, rich cobalt-blue palette and imaginative interpretation of Oriental subjects give this early plate a particularly strong decorative character.

Delft was one of Europe’s foremost centres for tin-glazed earthenware during the 18th century. Inspired by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Delft potters developed their own distinctive repertoire of hand-painted decoration, combining Oriental motifs with European flowers, landscapes, figures and ornamental designs. Painted in cobalt blue over an opaque white tin glaze, these plates and chargers were made both for use and decorative display.
