18th-Century Delft Blue & White Ware

A large 18th-century Dutch Delft blue and white plate, finely hand-painted with an abundant arrangement of stylised flowers and foliage issuing from a decorative basket. The central composition is framed by an elaborate panelled border of repeating floral and foliate motifs, while the gently shaped rim adds further decorative interest.

Delft was one of Europe’s foremost centres for tin-glazed earthenware during the 18th century. Inspired by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Delft potters developed their own distinctive repertoire of hand-painted decoration, combining Oriental motifs with European flowers, landscapes, figures and ornamental designs. Painted in cobalt blue over an opaque white tin glaze, these plates and chargers were made both for use and decorative display.

The dense cobalt decoration, rhythmic pattern and freely rendered botanical forms create a particularly attractive and highly decorative example of 18th-century Delftware.
