Early 18th Century Large Delft Blue and White Chinoiserie Charger

A particularly large Dutch Delft blue and white charger, circa 1720, boldly hand-painted with a chinoiserie figural scene. The central medallion depicts four figures seated within an elaborate architectural setting, surrounded by a broad panelled border alternating stylised floral ornament with further figural vignettes.

At 38 cm in diameter, its generous scale, strong architectural composition and lively cobalt decoration give this charger considerable presence as a decorative piece.

Delft was one of Europe’s foremost centres for tin-glazed earthenware during the 18th century. Inspired by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Delft potters developed their own distinctive repertoire of hand-painted decoration, combining Oriental motifs with European flowers, landscapes, figures and ornamental designs. Painted in cobalt blue over an opaque white tin glaze, these plates and chargers were made both for use and decorative display.
