Early 18th Century Large Delft Blue and White Floral Charger

A substantial Dutch Delft blue and white charger, circa 1720s, measuring an impressive 39 cm in diameter. The centre is boldly painted with a stylised flowering plant arranged in an ornamental vase, enclosed within a shaped cartouche and surrounded by a broad, strongly geometric panelled border.

The combination of floral ornament, geometric pattern and deep cobalt tones reflects the imaginative adaptation of Asian decorative sources by Delft potters during the early 18th century.

Delft was one of Europe’s foremost centres for tin-glazed earthenware during the 18th century. Inspired by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Delft potters developed their own distinctive repertoire of hand-painted decoration, combining Oriental motifs with European flowers, landscapes, figures and ornamental designs. Painted in cobalt blue over an opaque white tin glaze, these plates and chargers were made both for use and decorative display.
