The “late Edo period” refers to the final years of Japan’s Edo (or Tokugawa) period, specifically from the mid-19th century until 1867, which was characterized by the forced end of Japan’s isolationist policy and growing internal unrest that led to the Meiji Restoration. The arrival of U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853 is a key event, as it triggered a crisis and forced Japan to open its ports to foreign trade, leading to division among the daimyo and the eventual overthrow of the shogunate in 1868
