Large 18th-Century Delft Blue and White Charger
An impressive large 18th-century Dutch Delft blue and white charger, richly decorated across the entire surface. The central reserve is painted with a stylised flowering plant, surrounded by an elaborate symmetrical arrangement of scrolling foliage, palmettes and ornamental motifs in varying tones of cobalt blue.
The unusually dense decoration and generous scale give this charger a particularly bold and architectural presence, making it an excellent statement piece for display.
Delft was one of Europe’s foremost centres for tin-glazed earthenware during the 18th century. Inspired by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Delft potters developed their own distinctive repertoire of hand-painted decoration, combining Oriental motifs with European flowers, landscapes, figures and ornamental designs. Painted in cobalt blue over an opaque white tin glaze, these plates and chargers were made both for use and decorative display.
