Large Early 18th Century Delft Blue & White Ware

A large Dutch Delft blue and white plate, circa 1700, boldly decorated with an imaginative chinoiserie scene. The central medallion depicts two figures in a garden landscape beneath a tree, surrounded by a broad panelled border alternating further figural scenes with stylised floral and foliate ornament.

Delft was one of Europe’s foremost centres for tin-glazed earthenware during the 18th century. Inspired by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Delft potters developed their own distinctive repertoire of hand-painted decoration, combining Oriental motifs with European flowers, landscapes, figures and ornamental designs. Painted in cobalt blue over an opaque white tin glaze, these plates and chargers were made both for use and decorative display.

The lively narrative decoration and spontaneous cobalt brushwork are particularly evocative of the European fascination with Chinese imagery at the turn of the 18th century.
