Large Early 19th Century Delft Blue and White Dutch Peacock Plate, circa 1800s

A large Dutch Delft blue and white plate, circa 1800, with an attractive scalloped edge and richly painted decoration. The central medallion depicts a peacock standing amongst flowering plants and foliage, surrounded by concentric bands of stylised floral and foliate ornament.

The combination of the elegant peacock motif, densely worked cobalt decoration and shaped border gives the plate a particularly appealing decorative quality.

Delft was one of Europe’s foremost centres for tin-glazed earthenware during the 18th century. Inspired by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, Delft potters developed their own distinctive repertoire of hand-painted decoration, combining Oriental motifs with European flowers, landscapes, figures and ornamental designs. Painted in cobalt blue over an opaque white tin glaze, these plates and chargers were made both for use and decorative display.
