Large Pair of Early 19th Century Delft Blue and White Chargers, Circa 1800s
A striking pair of large Delft blue and white chargers, dating to circa 1800s, with richly worked all-over decoration.
Each is hand-painted in strong cobalt blue with a dense arrangement of stylised flowers, leafy stems and scrolling ornament. The centres are defined by bold circular blue medallions, surrounded by radiating floral panels, while the broad borders are filled with large-scale flowers and vigorous foliate motifs. The combination of finely drawn detail and freely brushed areas of deep blue gives the pair a particularly lively decorative quality.
The two chargers are closely matched while retaining the subtle differences characteristic of individual hand painting. Their generous scale and unusually dense decoration make them especially effective as display pieces.
The reverses are simply tin-glazed in white with broad foot rims. As visible in the photographs, there is age-related wear, glaze loss and fritting to the rims, together with surface and firing irregularities. One charger shows a more pronounced area of historic surface wear or damage to the well.
A handsome, characterful pair of early 19th-century Delft, with excellent presence for a wall, dresser or large collection.
