Pair of 18th-Century Delft Blue and White Plates Circa 1790
An attractive pair of late 18th-century Dutch Delft blue and white plates, dating to circa 1790s.
Each plate is boldly decorated in cobalt blue with a small central flowerhead surrounded by four densely painted panels of repeating scroll or wave motifs. These are divided by stylised foliate devices, while a complementary scrolling border encircles the outer rim. The restrained palette and strong geometric arrangement give the pair a particularly graphic decorative quality.
The reverse sides are tin-glazed in a pale blue-white and show the characteristic broad foot rims and hand-thrown irregularities associated with period Delftware. There is age-related fritting, glaze wear and some losses around the rims, clearly visible in the photographs and consistent with their 18th-century date.
