Pair of Large 18th-Century Delft Blue and White Plates

A striking pair of large 18th-century Dutch Delft blue and white plates, finely hand-painted in rich tones of cobalt blue.

Each plate is centred by an elaborate ornamental urn or vase filled with fruit and foliage, the body decorated with a delicate diaper pattern and surrounded by exuberant scrolling ornament. The central composition is enclosed within a distinctive eight-lobed cartouche with a boldly outlined, scale-like border.

The wide rims are washed in soft blue and embellished with freely drawn scrolling tendrils, creating an effective contrast with the crisp, darker cobalt decoration of the centres. A reddish-brown edge is visible around the rims, where the underlying earthenware body is exposed.

The reverse sides have a pale blue-white tin glaze with broad unglazed foot rims. Typical age-related glaze wear, fritting and small losses can be seen around the edges, consistent with antique Delftware of this period.

A particularly decorative pair with strong scale and symmetry, ideal for wall display or as statement pieces on a dresser or console.
