Pair of Large Delft Blue and White Floral Chargers, circa 1790

A handsome pair of large Delft blue and white chargers, dating to circa 1790, with distinctive hand-painted floral decoration.

Each plate is centred by a stylised arrangement of flowers and foliage set upon a geometric pedestal. The unusual central motif incorporates a bold quatrefoil form, surrounded by flowering stems and finely drawn foliage, with a tall linear spray rising through the composition. A delicate diaper-patterned band frames the central scene.

The broad rims are painted with generously spaced sprays of flowers and scrolling foliage in strong cobalt blue, contrasting effectively with the paler blue-white ground. Subtle differences between the two compositions and variations in the density of the cobalt are characteristic of their hand-painted manufacture.

The plates have broad, simply glazed reverses with substantial foot rims. As visible in the photographs, there is characteristic fritting and chipping to the edges, together with glaze wear, surface marks and firing irregularities consistent with their age and manufacture.

With their impressive scale and particularly graphic decoration, these make an attractive pair for display on a wall or a console.
