Pair of Large Delft Blue and White Floral Chargers, circa 1800

A decorative pair of large Delft blue and white chargers, dating to circa 1800, each hand-painted with a formal arrangement of flowers issuing from a classical-style urn.

The central decoration is particularly charming, with a striped pedestal vase supporting a bold stylised bouquet of flowers, buds and foliage, painted in varying shades of cobalt blue. The floral composition is enclosed by a narrow ornamental band, while the broad rims are decorated with spaced floral sprays and a delicate patterned border.

Although conceived as a pair, the hand-painted decoration displays small variations in brushwork and tone, giving each plate its own character. The restrained use of white space around the central bouquets makes these particularly fresh and attractive examples, while their substantial 35 cm diameter gives them excellent decorative presence.

The reverses are simply tin-glazed and raised on broad foot rims. The photographs show the expected signs of age associated with Delft pottery of this period, including glaze fritting and small losses around the rims, surface wear and minor firing imperfections.
