Set of Four Large 18th-Century Delft Blue and White Floral Chargers

A decorative set of four large 18th-century Delft chargers, hand-painted in cobalt blue and finished with distinctive ochre-yellow rims.

Each plate is centred by a bold stylised flowering plant, its large layered bloom rising from a fanciful bulbous base tied with scrolling ribbons and accompanied by smaller flowers and foliage. The central decoration is enclosed by a particularly attractive geometric and foliate border, combining cross-hatched diaper work with small flower heads and scrolling motifs.

The broad rims are freely painted with repeated floral sprays interspersed with small insects and butterflies. A scalloped blue line follows the outer edge, while the warm yellow rim provides a striking contrast to the traditional blue and white palette. The slight differences in brushwork from plate to plate give the set considerable character and clearly reveal their hand-painted nature.

The reverses are simply glazed and raised on broad foot rims. As shown in the photographs, the plates retain the expected signs of age and use, including areas of rim fritting and chipping, glaze wear and surface marks, together with typical firing imperfections. These are entirely in keeping with 18th-century Delftware.

An impressive and unusually decorative group, particularly effective displayed together as a set of four.
