Set of 18, 19th century French Apothecary Bottles

A highly decorative set of eighteen late 19th-century French chemist’s or apothecary bottles, retaining a remarkably cohesive appearance. Each bottle is formed in richly coloured deep blue glass, with a cylindrical body, rounded shoulders and a distinctive green-covered closure finished with gilded bands.

The bottles retain their original-style pharmaceutical labels, finely presented in white and gold with bold black lettering identifying preparations and ingredients once found in the traditional French dispensary. Visible inscriptions include Gom. Arabique, Chlor. Potasse, Acid. Salicylic., Acid. Tartrique, Lycopode, Bi-Tartr. Pot. P., Borat. de Soude, Gom. Sénégal, Tannin à l’Alc., Tannin Ether, S. Nitr. Bismuth, Poud. d’Asa-Fetid., Gom. Ammon. and Magnés. Lourde, amongst others.

The combination of saturated blue glass, crisp pharmaceutical typography, emerald-green coverings and gilt detailing gives the collection considerable visual presence.
