A Circa 1900 Miniature Alhambra Diorama

Wonderful, late 19th , turn of the 20th century framed Alhambra diorama in alabaster, plaster and polychrome within a silk, velvet and leather-backed frame.

Inspired by the celebrated architecture of Granada’s Alhambra Palace, this finely executed miniature diorama captures the intricate elegance of Hispano-Moorish design in remarkable detail. Dating from around 1900, the composition depicts a delicately carved alabaster column supporting twin horseshoe arches, framed by richly coloured polychrome ornament and intricate geometric decoration evocative of the Nasrid palaces.

Presented within its original silk, velvet and leather-backed frame, the work combines architectural craftsmanship with the refined sensibilities of the Grand Tour era, when intimate recreations of celebrated monuments were prized as sophisticated souvenirs and decorative objets d’art. The subtle depth of the diorama creates an engaging three-dimensional effect, lending the composition both intimacy and theatricality.

A beautifully preserved decorative piece, this elegant miniature offers an evocative celebration of Islamic architecture and the enduring fascination with the Alhambra, making it an elegant addition to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
