Fine Pair of Early 19th Century Irish Carved and Painted Overdoors

A particularly striking pair of early 19th century Irish carved and painted architectural overdoors, of impressive scale and retaining their original decorative scheme.

Each overdoor is boldly conceived, with a projecting moulded cornice enriched with a finely carved running foliate border, above a deep frieze profusely decorated with repeating classical ornament. The carving incorporates vigorous scrolling foliage, stylised anthemion and palmette motifs, giving the pair a wonderfully sculptural quality and strong architectural presence.

Of particular note is the remarkable survival of the original painted decoration. The surfaces have been carefully hand-scraped back to reveal the early paint beneath later layers, resulting in a beautifully time-worn, chalky surface with subtle variations of cream, ochre and exposed ground. This untouched character works especially well with the depth and crispness of the carving.

The shaped upper sections, with their gently rising central profiles and rounded end blocks, complete the strong neoclassical composition.

Irish, circa 1820.

A rare and highly decorative pair, with excellent proportions and considerable presence. Originally intended as architectural overdoors, they would work equally well today mounted above doorways, incorporated into a library or drawing-room scheme, or simply displayed as sculptural architectural elements on a large wall.
