Pierre Lagénie (26 November 1938 – 25 March 2020) was a French sculptor best known for his bronze works inspired by the female form.
Lagénie studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux before joining the studio of Marcel Gimond at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris in 1957. Working primarily in bronze, he developed a sculptural language marked by classical rigor and a deep, enduring engagement with the human body.
According to Deux siècles d’arts à Bordeaux, Lagénie “traced a path in which his work became timeless, independent of his century and of his time.” Le Spectacle du Monde described his practice as one of patience and devotion, noting that he “models, molds, melts, and chisels, performing all the ritual gestures of his art with inexhaustible passion.”
Pierre Lagénie died on 25 March 2020 at the age of 81.
