Wonderful Early 20th Century Italian Manifattura di Signa Terracotta Garden Statue

A wonderful and very decorative early 20th century Italian terracotta garden statue by the renowned Manifattura di Signa, Florence.

Of particularly good scale and beautifully modelled, the statue depicts a classical female figure or nymph, elegantly draped and leaning forward whilst holding a large two-handled basin. The basin rests upon a wonderfully naturalistic tree-trunk support entwined with foliage.

The quality of the modelling is particularly pleasing, from the softly rendered features and classical arrangement of the hair to the deeply folded drapery and detailing of the tree trunk.

Raised on a substantial separately made architectural terracotta pedestal, with a moulded cornice and stepped base, the whole has acquired a lovely pale, weathered surface and patina which gives it great presence.

Of further interest, both the statue and pedestal retain their original impressed Italian factory marks. The figure is stamped “MADE IN ITALY”, model number 1711, with the letter V and the circular Manifattura di Signa mark, whilst the pedestal is separately stamped “MADE IN ITALY”, model number 1402, the letter E and the corresponding factory mark.

Founded at Signa, near Florence, in 1895, the Manifattura di Signa became particularly celebrated for its finely produced terracotta sculpture and garden ornament, drawing inspiration from Classical, Renaissance and later European sculpture.

A very handsome and unusual piece of Italian garden statuary, with wonderful scale, colour and surface, which would work equally well in a garden, orangery, conservatory or large interior. Wear commensurate with age and use.

Stamped and numbered to both the figure and pedestal.
