Restorations.
Sculpture ascribed to neoclassicism, representing Aphrodite wrapped in a tunic whose fine fabric adheres to her body, highlighting her curves. In this, the sculptor emulates the Greek technique of wet cloths. The goddess of beauty holds an apple in her left hand, alluding to the golden apple of discord, the Greek myth that narrates the dispute between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. The slender, harmonious canon of the goddess follows classical models. Popularly known as the “Judgement of Paris”, legend has it that the goddess of discord, Eris, angry at not being invited to a wedding attended by most of the gods, throws the Apple of Discord on which was inscribed “for the most beautiful”. Hera, Athena and Aphrodite dispute the apple and decide that the Trojan prince Paris should choose between them. Paris opts for Aphrodite, who offered him the love of Helen of Sparta in exchange, which triggered the subsequent Trojan War.
