Finely Carved 18th Century French Figure of Saint Roch

A finely carved eighteenth-century French figure of Saint Roch, patron saint of pilgrims and protector against plague, depicted standing in the traditional pilgrim’s attire. He carries his walking staff and lifts his robe to reveal the plague sore on his leg, one of the saint’s defining attributes. The scallop shells adorning his cape, emblematic of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, further confirm his identity. These are among the standard iconographic attributes of Saint Roch.

The sculpture is distinguished by the exceptional quality of its carving.
