Fine Early 20th Century Spanish 16 Arm Glass Chandelier in the Manner of La Granja
An elegant early 20th century Spanish La Granja-style chandelier of impressive scale, finely executed in hand-blown and moulded clear glass.
The chandelier is arranged over two graduated tiers with sixteen gracefully scrolling twisted-glass arms, each terminating in a finely moulded drip pan with gilt brass candle cups. Rising from a beautifully balustered central stem, the upper section is crowned with delicate scrolling glass ornament and suspended from a wrought iron hanging hook.
The chandelier is richly ornamented throughout with faceted glass bead swags and an abundance of cut-glass pendants, including elongated prisms and pear-shaped drops that lend exceptional brilliance and movement. The warm gilt brass bowls at the centre provide a pleasing contrast to the clarity of the glass and reflect the refined neoclassical taste associated with the celebrated glassworks of La Granja de San Ildefonso.
Inspired by the chandeliers produced by the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja, founded in the eighteenth century to furnish the Spanish royal palaces, this is a particularly handsome example dating from the early twentieth century. Elegant in both scale and proportion, it would make a striking centrepiece in either a period or contemporary interior. Faults and losses commensurate with age and use.
