A finely observed portrait of a weathered fisherman by the Asturian painter Agustín Otermin y García, whose work is celebrated for its sympathetic depictions of the people and landscapes of northern Spain. Rendered with a confident naturalism, the sitter’s sun-worn features and steadfast expression capture the dignity and resilience of those whose lives were shaped by the sea.

Painted around 1904, during the artist’s mature period, the composition reflects Otermin’s academic training combined with a sensitive, realist approach to portraiture. The restrained palette and expressive handling of paint lend the work a quiet monumentality, characteristic of the regional realism that flourished in Spain at the turn of the twentieth century.

Born in Vidiago, Asturias, Otermin studied at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid before returning to northern Spain, where he devoted much of his career to recording the customs, landscapes, and maritime communities of Asturias. His paintings are represented in regional museums and public collections and remain highly regarded for their authenticity and technical accomplishment.
