Large and Impressive Late 19th / Early 20th Cent Tapestry Cartoon / Theatrical Painting

A large and impressive late 19th / early 20th century French tapestry cartoon / theatrical painting of a roman scene with centurions and legionaries between a border.
These paintings were used as the working drawings for the weavers of the tapestries . During weaving they are placed under the warp threads and the wooden spools with the silks and wools are dropped onto the surface of the paint,
this would obviously damage the paint and depending on how many times they were used as models the greater the wear to the painted surface , but they do however show the original colours intended and are always life size.
This present piece is likely to be a tapestry cartoon, but could also have been used for in a theatre.
