“Selene and Endymion” Late 17th Century Flemish Tapestry

A fine late 17th century Audenarde tapestry, Flanders, depicting Selene and Endymion.
Selene, goddess of the moon , daughter of the titans Hyperion and Theia is in love with the shepherd Endymion. In the foreground on the right, Endymion holding his staff, is immersed in a sleep so that he does not age. On the left we see the chariot of the goddess drawn by deer with golden antlers. In the background a French park architecture is revealed with a fountain surrounded by columns and lush vegetation. The border with birds, fruits and garlands of stylized flowers and foliage.
