Fine Early 19th Century Italian Painted and Gilded Sofa

A fine and elegant early 19th century Italian painted and parcel-gilt three-seat sofa of distinctive and refined form, dating to circa 1800.

The shaped serpentine back is centred by a finely carved foliate crest and sweeps gracefully to outscrolled terminals. The elegant downswept arms terminate in carved scrolls and are supported by slender curved uprights. The frieze is centred by a carved gilt foliate ornament, and the sofa stands on four tapering, fluted and sheathed legs with carved capitals and pointed feet, retaining its original painted and gilded decoration.

The frame has acquired a beautiful mellow patina, and the sofa has been professionally reupholstered by us in a natural brown linen with close-nailed brass studwork, complementing its restrained Neoclassical character.
