Fine 18th Century French Louis XVI Period Walnut Marquetry Commode

A fine late 18th century French Louis XVI period walnut and marquetry commode, of elegant proportions and with a particularly attractive warm colour and patina.

The rectangular top is beautifully figured and centred by an oval marquetry medallion, enclosed within delicate geometric banding. Below are three long drawers, each cleverly conceived as a series of architectural panels and enriched with contrasting marquetry, fine ribboned stringing and simulated fluting.

The panelled sides continue the restrained neoclassical decoration, with canted angles leading down to elegant tapering sheath feet. Retaining its decorative brass ring handles and escutcheons.

A handsome and very decorative commode, displaying the refined geometric ornament associated with Louis XVI cabinetmaking and retaining a wonderfully mellow surface.

Eastern French work.

Wear consistent with age and use.
