Fine Art Deco Curved Cuban Mahogany and Giltwood Commode

A fine and unusual Art Deco two-door commode or buffet dating to circa 1930 with a gently bowed front and a polished mahogany top with rounded corners. Its two figured Cuban mahogany doors are framed by an exuberantly carved and gilded frieze of scrolling acanthus leaves and foliate ornament, continuing around the upper and lower rails and down the sides. The commode/ buffet is raised on four substantial block feet, each enriched with carved and gilded scroll decoration.

The doors open to reveal a beautifully fitted interior containing eight curved drawers arranged in two banks, veneered in richly figured maple and fitted with discreet recessed pulls.

Combining the restrained geometry of the Art Deco period with lavish hand-carved decoration, this striking cabinet is both highly decorative and practical.
