Black Japanned and Parcel-Gilt Kneehole Desk, Circa 1930s

A highly decorative black japanned and parcel-gilt kneehole desk in the early 18th-century English manner, dating from the 1930s. The rectangular top is decorated with gilt chinoiserie scenes depicting figures, pavilions and birds within an expansive landscape, all set against a rich black ground.

The front is arranged with seven drawers surrounding a shaped kneehole, each fitted with brass drop handles and adorned with hand-painted gilt birds, foliage and floral motifs. The decoration continues to the sides with elegant foliate sprays. Raised on graceful cabriole legs with carved acanthus knees and terminating in pad feet, the desk captures the charm and sophistication of early Georgian japanned furniture while offering practical proportions for modern interiors.
