Late 18th Century Chinese Export Black Lacquer Tray Table

A fine late 18th century Chinese export black lacquer and gilt-decorated tray, made in Canton for the European market circa 1780s. The shaped tray is beautifully decorated with an Orientalist garden scene of exotic birds, flowering branches and foliage, retaining a wonderfully aged surface and patina.

The tray rests upon a later French black-painted stand, circa 1880, with carved gilt highlights and elegant cabriole legs. A particularly decorative and practical piece, combining fine Chinese export craftsmanship with a sympathetic 19th century European base.
