Laura Knight (1877-1970),one of the leading women artist of the twentieth century,was a household name during her lifetime and the first woman artist to be made a Dame of the British Empire.

Her work is remarkable for its variety

and for its quality.From her early images of life in a Yorkshire fishing village to the brigthness and vigour of her paintings of women and children out of doors in Cornwall and her later paintings recording the starkness of the Nuremberg trials,her work is painted with a directness and flair for human experience.
