Our story

Jorge (George) Perez-Martin and David Gibson are the Spanish-Anglo duo behind Brownrigg.

Combining the tantalising search for new and interesting stock with the visionary journey for their own home; they gain endless pleasure from helping clients around the world find pieces to take their homes and projects a step closer to perfection.

Personal journeys as diverse as their stock…

A brief holiday in London led Jorge to decide on a whim to leave the warmth of Valencia for a new life in the UK. After a short career in hotels and catering he seized the moment and opened the first Brownrigg shop in Petworth, West Sussex in 2000. A small redundancy windfall was enough to get him started, having cut his teeth buying pieces in the local antique markets and fairs. Before the door opened for the first time he knew that he had found his place in life and that there would be no looking back…

David meanwhile in the midst of a rewarding but at times frustrating career in law, felt the net closing in as, after yet another lengthy day of deal making, he found himself helping his erstwhile partner deliver a pair of armchairs to the sixth floor of a smart apartment block. He knew it was only a matter of time before his two parallel worlds became incompatible and the nightmare of bumping into a City client who knew nothing of his little evening and weekend joint venture with SSJ! A final takeover deal and the opportunity to escape came up. Suits mothballed, ties unworn and no looking back either; condemned to years of being introduced as… ‘this is David… he used to be in corporate’… eyeballs raised emoji!

The business has consistently evolved year on year. A move to Tetbury, Gloucestershire came in 2012. It was well timed from both a business and personal perspective and quickly became a permanent home both for the business and for the Brownrigg duo and their dutiful hounds.

Over the years, Jorge and David have sought to hone the creative drive to shape and direct the business as a go-to destination for interior designers, decorators and private clients alike.

The Brownrigg shop in Tetbury, Gloucestershire houses a significant and representative selection of the stock that we hold. This website has additional stock much of which is held in our nearby warehouse facility.

Over many years, we have learned that our clients come to us because we have such an interesting mix – and one that often encourages and tempts clients to try something different.

We are often asked, ‘Is a shop really necessary in this digital age…?’ For us the answer is a resolute ‘yes’. Clients who can get to us, like to see things in the flesh and this is an important part of building relationships and ones that stand the test of time; especially when it comes to future purchases and feeling confident of making a decision when all you have seen are the photographs that are on the website.

The shop is also an important part of the process for the team and the whole buying, restoring, curating room settings and taking photographs, would be a very different experience if all done within the confines of a warehouse and photographic area with little one to one client interaction.

We believe that provincial high streets like Tetbury will continue to thrive and Brownrigg certainly won’t be pulling down the shutters on its high street windows any time soon.

The question we are most often asked is about the areas in which Brownrigg specialises. The answer is that whilst we have countries, periods and genres that we are passionate about, we don’t really claim to be specialists in a particular area.

Over many years, we have learned that our clients come to us because we have such an interesting mix – and one that often encourages and tempts clients to try something different.

Nothing is ‘off limits’, so you may find pieces that are a youthful 30 years old next to several centuries old, but as desirable as they were at the time of their creation.

We add new stock daily onto our website and social media channels and these have become an important part of our business and highly effective tools for our clients.

Meanwhile at the shop –

In 2019 we lost our front of house support after many years. Instagram dutifully delivered and James arrived within days and soon had the place (…and us) running smoothly and declared himself ready and licensed to sell.

His enviable patience and ability to tolerate the misguided pedantry of an ex lawyer and regular thunderstorms that blow in from Spain, are the stuff of Tetbury legends and put quite simply… we couldn’t do it all without him.

Events

We usually exhibit three times a year at the Battersea Antiques and Decorative Fair in London as well as regular coverage and references in the leading interior design and antiques press and publications.

The COVID pandemic has resulted in the last three Battersea Fairs being cancelled but we are very much hoping to be back there this autumn.
