“Vues d’Amérique du Nord” 19th Cent Hand Painted Wallpaper by Zuber

Wonderful late 19th/ early 20th century French hand painted wallpaper “Vues d'Amérique du Nord ” fragment by the famous French company Zuber, newly framed on a large 19th century Painted frame.

The French firm of Zuber et Cie introduced this scenic wallpaper, Vues d’Amérique du Nord, in 1834. Almost one hundred years later, John Nicholas Brown bought the wallpaper, which was still being printed, from Zuber for this house. Working with architects, Brown carefully designed and decorated the front hallway to evoke an idealized American past shaped in part by his own ancestors. In the 1990s, a renovation of this building brought a new set of this wallpaper from Zuber’s original 1834 wood engraving blocks. The wallpaper also decorates other American homes and public buildings, including the White House..

This picture depicts the Obamas standing in front of the same wallpaper that is in the Nightingale Brown house in the White House, in the Diplomatic Reception Room. It was installed by Jackie Kennedy.

Zuber wallpaper, Views of North America, hangs in the dining room of the President’s House and was installed by the wife of college president Dixon Ryan Fox in 1934. These wood-block printed panels were first produced in 1834 by Jean Zuber et Cie in Alsace, France. Each panel featured a different scene from North America, including Niagara Falls and Boston Harbor, as well as other early American points of interest
